Differences between Silk Chiffon and Other Types of Silk Fabrics

But, no two silk fabrics are alike. Silk can be made out of several different types and each type has a look, feel, and weave to it etc. 

Silk Chiffon : Silk chiffon is a commonly referred to type of silk fabric… Being that it is so light and delicate feeling fabric – it is soft as air. If one thinks of a chiffon, it is the very thin silk threads that are twisted and woven in a particular way to create an excellent transparent fabric. SILK CHIFFON: Ideal for creating soft draping dresses, elegant scarves and other delicate clothing that needs a little gentle touch. 

Chiffon or Crepe de Chine? 

While pieces made of silk chiffon bear close similarity to another variety of silk like the crepe de chine. Crepe de chine is made from twisted silk yarns, the same as a chiffon but has a crinkly surface so feels different. It is also a tad thicker than chiffon, hence, appears less transparent. Crepe de chine typically has a heavier hand, which is why it is often found in blouses and other garments that require some body to hold the garment together. 

Sheerness and Weight Comparison Silk Organza vs. Silk Chiffon

The other silk fabric and Oxford Fabric you could come across is Silk Organza. It is a very sheer and crisp-light fabric (silk organza) that has an excellent ability to stay in shape, even while it is transparent. For this reason, it is a favorite for wedding dresses and frocks designed to be worn at nice function as the material has an upscale-esque quality about it which adds charm to a look. Organza is heavier than chiffon it still quite thin, which makes it a wonderful choice when you need to fill out some beautiful skirts and dresses. 

Silk Organza vs Silk Chiffon – The Differences Between ThemWhen you compare silk organza to silk chiffon, the essential difference is how super luxurious for each fabric. Silk chiffon is a very light, sheer fabric which drapes beautifully on the body. Silk organza, on the other hand is DRY and STIFF and holds its shape beautifully. While phantom crepe and ity are both great choices for creating beautiful wearable garments, their unique textures and weights can impact the final aesthetic of a garment. 

How Silk Georgette is a More Structured, Heavier Option to Sheer Chiffon

Another silk fabric and Chiffon Fabric that you often hear gets compared to chiffon is silk georgette. Chiffonette is made from twisted silk fibres like chiffon, however it has a slightly textured surface. Silk Georgette, though heavier and crisper than chiffon, has an ethereal quality all its own. It is especially good for blouses and dresses as it has more body than chiffon. 

Chiffon vs. Dupioni

The final fabric we will measure with chiffon is dupioni silk. Dupion: A textured crisp silk, created by weaving 2 twisted threads. In addition to this rougher texture, the lumpy (Appearance) on the dupioni fabrics it has made is less attractive and more pronounced than chiffon fabrics. The clothing made from it like dresses, suits are generally formal looking and usually worn on special occasions because of the elegant finish and its shape-holding property. 

Ultimately, silk textiles are sought after by clothing and accessory designers because each truly offers their only unique texture and look.  Chiffon silk is light and delicate while crepe de chine has more body. Silk organza is a crisp, stiff type of silk and lining Taffeta which makes it perfect for those designs that demand plenty of coverage, and silk georgette lies between chiffon and crepe de chine in weight and opacity. Cotton-silk blend is soft and does not have the extra shine, while dupioni silk has a more rigid texture which feels less luxurious but just as beautiful. So you can make an educated decision about which silk fabric is best for your sewing project.
